- Ladders made of timber should be stored in a dry cool place which is well ventilated and protected from weather , Extreme temperatures and dampness should be avoided.
- Ladders stored horizontally should be supported at several points to prevent sagging.
- Ladders should be inspected frequently for defects , nuts and bolts kept tight.
- Ladders damaged should be withdrawn from service for repair or distruction , and marked DANGEROUS - DO NOT USE
- Ladders should be placed on a firm level footing , and when necessary , lashed to prevent slipping.
- Ladders used in a vertical position should be placed at an angle which is equal to one quater of the working length of the ladder.
- Ladders used at door wary should have the door blocked open , locked or guarded.
- Ladders used against framing or brittle material should be supported by a board fastened across the top of the stiles to distribute load.
- Ladders step type , should be used in the fully spread position. The top of the step should not be used as a step or tread , stand atleast 2 treads from the top.
- Ladders are normally made to carry one person. When standing or moving on a ladder , Face it , and have atleast one hand free to grip the ladder.
- Ladders and steps are not designed for any degree of side loading and such abuse should be avoided. Climb on the middle of the rung or tread , keep your body within the side rails. DO NOT OVER REACH from a ladder or step. Get down and move it.
- Ladders made of timber should not be painted. To preserve timber it is recommended that varnish or a similar tranparent material be used.
